Sai Shrine
Sai Shrine (Saijinja) is a shrine located within the precincts of Ōmiwa Shrine, which is regarded as Japan’s oldest shrine. It is said to have been established in the era of Emperor Suinin and is an inner shrine listed in the Engishiki that enshrines the aramitama (rough spirit) of the deity. The grounds are filled with a refreshing atmosphere and are sometimes called Nara Prefecture’s top power spot. Owing to its strong divine presence, it is widely worshipped as a deity for recovery from illness and good health. To the left rear of the worship hall is a well known as the "Kusuri Ido" (Medicine Well). The water that springs from it is called "kusuri-mizu" (medicinal water) and is said to be effective for illness. The Chinka-sai (Hanashizume-no-matsuri) held every year on April 18 has a history of 2,000 years. Under the Taihō Code enacted in 701, it was stipulated as a state ritual to be performed at Ōmiwa Shrine and Sai Shrine. It is an apotropaic festival known as a "medicine festival," and is famous for the attendance of many medical professionals. Main access is about a 15-minute walk from JR Miwa Station (Manyō-Mahoroba Line), or about a 15-minute walk from the Nara Kotsu bus stop "Miwa Myōjin / Ōmiwa Jinja / Ni-no-Torii-mae."
