Takada Honzan Senjuji Temple

Senshuji Temple, the head temple of the Takada school of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, is affectionately known as "Takada Honzan." As the main temple of one of the ten Jodo Shinshu sects, it is an important site for Buddhist culture and pilgrimage tourism. The Mie-do Hall, which enshrines a wooden statue of the founder Shinran Shonin, and the Nyorai-do Hall, which enshrines the principal image of Amida Nyorai, were designated as the first National Treasures in Mie Prefecture in 2017. Within its vast grounds of about 30,000 tsubo (roughly twice the size of the Tokyo Dome), there are also 11 nationally designated Important Cultural Properties, including the grand Sanmon gate, and numerous treasured Buddhist items are preserved, such as the National Treasure Saiho Shinan Sho and precious sacred objects associated with Shinran Shonin. Paid, scheduled guided tours are also offered, where you can tour the two National Treasures and five Important Cultural Properties together while listening to explanations from a guide. Beyond its historic architecture, the temple is also known for its seasonal beauty: colorful cherry blossoms and wisteria in spring, lotus flowers that have become a symbol of Takada Honzan in summer, autumn foliage in fall, and snowy scenery in winter. Access is also easy, with the temple about a five-minute walk from Isshinden Station, next to JR Tsu Station.
