Mie Prefectural Art Museum
The Mie Prefectural Art Museum, located about a 10-minute walk from the west exit of Tsu Station, opened in 1982 as the first full-scale art museum in the Chubu and Tokai regions. Its collection totals about 6,000 works, including pieces by artists with deep connections to Mie Prefecture, modern and contemporary Japanese and Western art, and Spanish art added after Mie Prefecture formed a sister partnership with Valencia, Spain, in 1992. The museum spans from Basement Level 1 to the 2nd floor and includes three permanent exhibition rooms where collection exhibitions are held in four terms per year, as well as four special exhibition rooms for independently planned exhibitions and collaborative shows. With an on-site restaurant and museum shop, you can enjoy meals and shopping while savoring the afterglow of art appreciation. During a 2003 renovation, the Yoshiatsu Yanagihara Memorial Museum opened as a new section, displaying works by Yoshiatsu Yanagihara, a sculptor who represented Japan’s postwar figurative sculpture scene.
