Fujisan Ryokan

Fujisan Ryokan is a historic inn in Namari Onsen, one of the Hanamaki Onsen hot spring areas in Iwate Prefecture, with roots stretching back to the Edo period. Its baths are 100% free-flowing natural hot spring water with no heating, no added water, and no circulation—perfect for travelers who want to experience authentic, unaltered onsen. The most famous bath is "Hakuen-no-Yu," renowned as Japan’s deepest naturally bubbling rock bath. At about 1.25 meters deep, it’s a rare stand-up style bath, and the even water pressure across the body is said to help support circulation. Access is convenient: about 25 minutes by car from JR Tohoku Main Line "Hanamaki Station," or about 35 minutes by car from Tohoku Shinkansen "Shin-Hanamaki Station." Free shuttle buses operate from both stations, and with advance reservation, complimentary pick-up is also available for groups of 5 to 19. The main building, a wooden structure built in the early Showa era and crafted entirely from keyaki (zelkova), is also notable—writer Torahiko Tamiya stayed here, and the inn even became a setting for his novel. With a riverside annex and a long-stay therapeutic wing for toji (hot-spring therapy), it’s an inviting place to slowly heal mind and body. Day-use bathing is also recommended for those who want a casual visit. Nearby, you can continue a literature-themed trip with attractions like the Takamura Kotaro Memorial Museum and the Miyazawa Kenji Memorial Museum, or enjoy nature at Koiwai Farm.
