Buke yashiki District and the Nomura Family House
Nomura Samurai House is a historic residence open to visitors in Nagamachi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It recreates the Edo-period home of Nomura Denbei Nobusada, a chief retainer of the Maeda clan, and visitors can see samurai household tools, a garden, a tea room, and more. The Nomura family garden has received very high praise in the American Japanese-garden specialty magazine Journal of Japanese Gardening, and it was ranked 3rd in a 2003 Japanese garden ranking by a U.S. garden magazine—showing how exceptional it is. The surrounding Nagamachi samurai district features many upper- and middle-ranking samurai residences from the Kaga Domain era, so the whole area offers an immersive atmosphere of the feudal period. In winter, komokake (straw coverings) are applied to protect earthen walls from snow. Inside Nomura House, you can also view sliding-door paintings, swords, armor, and other Edo-period furnishings that are rarely seen. Access: about a 5-minute walk from the “Korinbo” bus stop served by the Kanazawa Loop Bus, Kenrokuen Shuttle, Hokutetsu route buses, and West Japan JR buses.
