Monet's Pond

Monet’s Pond is a reservoir within the grounds of Nemichi Shrine. Because the scene of water lilies blooming in exceptionally clear spring water and koi swimming gracefully evokes the worldview of Claude Monet’s famous “Water Lilies,” it came to be called “Monet’s Pond.” Locals affectionately call it the “Nameless Pond.” The pond’s water is hard water, which makes it difficult for microorganisms to grow; this helps maintain its clarity. In early summer, when the water lilies bloom, the amount of spring water flowing in increases and the clarity becomes especially high—one of the best times of year for the scenery. The spring water flowing into the pond stays around 14°C, so it does not freeze even in winter; even outside the blooming season, combinations with autumn leaves or snowy scenery can look wonderfully. Because the lilies bloom in the morning, visiting in the morning is recommended. Also, the day after rain the water can be cloudy, so it’s best to visit after a stretch of clear weather. Many koi swim in the pond, and it’s also famous that there may be a koi with a heart-shaped marking.
