Sannnai-Maruyama Special Historical Site

The Sannai-Maruyama Site is a large settlement ruin dating from the Early to Middle Jomon Period (approximately 5,500 to 4,000 years ago) and covers an area of 42 hectares. On the free guided tours, visitors can explore highlights such as the "South Mound," believed to have been a garbage disposal area or ritual site; the reconstructed Large Post-Built Structure, standing 14.7 meters tall and thought to have served as a watchtower; and the reconstructed Large Pit Dwelling, measuring about 32 meters long and 9.8 meters wide, believed to have been a communal hall or shared winter residence. If you are short on time, you can also explore the site freely at your own pace and focus only on areas of interest. The indoor facility "Jomon Jiyukan" includes the Sanmaru Museum, which displays excavated artifacts such as clay figurines, a hands-on workshop where you can try making items like slab-shaped clay figurines and magatama beads, and the restaurant "Gosen-nen no Hoshi," which serves dishes inspired by ingredients eaten by the Jomon people. At the restaurant, be sure to try the chestnut soft-serve ice cream "Soft Kurimu," made with chestnuts believed to have been cultivated during the Jomon era. The Aomori Museum of Art is located just across the street, making it ideal to visit both attractions together.
