Metasequoia Tree-lined Road

The Metasequoia Tree-Lined Road is a scenic 2.4 km stretch running from Makino Pickland to Makino Plateau. It began in 1981 (Showa 56) when the Makino Town Fruit Production Association planted the trees as part of a schoolchildren’s farm project called “Makino: A Village to Learn from the Soil.” Metasequoia is a deciduous conifer (cypress family), and today about 500 trees stand in a grand avenue-like formation. One highlight is how the scenery changes through the seasons: fresh green in spring, deeper green toward summer, a soft brick-like autumn color during foliage season, and a dignified beauty when snow covers the landscape in winter. This highland-like scenery was selected by Yomiuri Shimbun as part of the “New 100 Best Street Trees of Japan.” If using public transportation, take a community bus (Makino Kogen Line) from JR Makino Station for about 6 minutes and get off at “Makino Pickland,” right nearby.
