Kaizu-Osaki Peninsula
Kaizu Osaki is a rugged rocky headland formed by wave erosion on the northern shores of Lake Biwa. At the tip of the cape stands Osaki-dera Temple of the Shingon Chizan school. The area is celebrated as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Lake Biwa, known as "Dawn Mist over the Kaizu Osaki Reefs." Along the lakeside road, around 800 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom over a 4-kilometer stretch, creating a breathtaking cherry blossom tunnel. Recognized as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, this avenue is carefully preserved through community-led efforts. The best viewing season is from early to mid-April, when sightseeing boats and kayaks dot the lake, attracting many visitors. During cherry blossom season, traffic restrictions are enforced, but well-maintained cycling routes allow visitors to enjoy the scenery by bicycle. The nearest station is Makino Station on the JR Kosei Line, about a 30-minute walk away. Community buses also operate from Makino Station.
