Kunenan
Kunen-an is a residence built in sukiya-style architecture with an outstanding Japanese garden, located in Niiyama (Jinzen) in Kanzaki, Saga Prefecture, embraced by the Chikushi Plain. It was originally a second home for the highly successful Saga businessman Yataro Itami; construction began in 1900 (Meiji 33) and was completed in 1909 (Meiji 42). The name “Kunen-an” comes from the nine years it took to build. The 6,800 m² garden features azaleas, maple trees, natural vegetation, and lush green cedar moss that enhances its beautiful atmosphere. Kunen-an is especially famous for autumn colors; it is generally opened to the public for only nine days in mid-November during peak foliage season. Due to the popularity of the autumn opening, it has also been opened to the public in the fresh green season. Access: by car, about 15 minutes from Higashisefuri IC (Nagasaki Expressway). By public transportation, take a taxi about 15 minutes from JR Nagasaki Main Line “Kanzaki Station” via Prefectural Route 21.
