Cape Kamui

Cape Kamui is a cape in Kamimisaki-cho, Shakotan Town, Shakotan District, Hokkaido. It juts out from the Shakotan Peninsula into the Sea of Japan, and at its tip are Cape Kamui Lighthouse and Kamui Rock—an area historically known for difficult and dangerous sea navigation. After passing through the gate once known as the "women-only prohibited" gate, visitors can walk along cliffside paths (with railings) to the cape’s end, where they are rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of the Sea of Japan—rugged rocks and powerful waves on a grand scale. Scenic highlights shaped by rough seas include the unusual "Window Rock" and the "West Shore" area, both popular spots to feel the raw energy of the coast. There is a legend that a chieftain’s daughter, Charenka, fell in love with Minamoto no Yoshitsune and threw herself into the sea while pursuing him, forming Kamui Rock; after that, ship accidents reportedly increased and the area was said to be forbidden to women. Today, women can visit freely, so there is no need to worry. However, the gate is closed in winter, so seasonal access should be noted. Access is about 140 minutes by bus from Otaru Station.
