Sazaedo Temple

Sazae-do (Aizu Sazae-do), built on Iimoriyama—known as the site where the Byakkotai committed ritual suicide—is a hexagonal, three-tiered hall standing 16.5 meters tall. Its official name is "Entsu Sansodo" (Entsu-san-so-do), but it is called Sazae-do because its shape resembles a turban shell (sazae). In the past, Saigoku 33 Kannon statues were enshrined along its unique double-helix slope, and worshippers were said to be able to complete the 33 Kannon pilgrimage simply by visiting this hall. The most fascinating feature is the dual-spiral ramp where the ascending and descending routes are completely separate—an architectural form that exists as a real wooden building only here in the world. Because of this rare style, its uniqueness is recognized in architectural history, and in 1996 (Heisei 8) it was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It’s located among city sightseeing spots, so it can be enjoyed on the same day as other attractions. Access is convenient: get off at the loop bus stop "Iimoriyama-shita" and walk about 5 minutes, or drive about 15 minutes from the Aizuwakamatsu IC.
