Menuma Shodenzan Kangi-in Temple
Menuma Shodenzan Kangi-in is a Shingon Buddhist temple of the Koyasan sect located in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture. Its main hall, which has continued since 1179, is designated as a National Treasure. The carvings and breathtaking beauty of the main hall (inner sanctuary) are truly awe-inspiring. Menuma Shodenzan is one of Japan’s Three Great Shoten sites and is especially known for blessings related to matchmaking. In addition to matchmaking, it is also believed to bring household safety, business prosperity, good fortune and protection from misfortune, traffic safety, and success in studies and education. Recently, it has become popular as a matchmaking power spot. Quiet trends like shakyo (sutra copying) gatherings have also helped boost its popularity, as people calm their minds through writing. Major events such as the Dai-Ennichi Grand Festival service and Setsubun celebrations draw large crowds every time, and it is a popular tourist attraction not only for locals but also for travelers. Volunteer-led National Treasure Menuma Shodenzan guides are also available, making it easy to learn about the temple during your visit. Access to Menuma Shodenzan Kangi-in is a 25-minute bus ride from Kumagaya Station on the JR Takasaki Line. Photography is allowed, but touching the buildings or carvings is prohibited, so please be careful.
