Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is the world’s longest suspension bridge, spanning the Akashi Strait between Higashi-Maikocho, Tarumi Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture and Iwaya, Awaji City. Its total length is 3,911 meters, and the distance between the two main towers that support the cables is 1,991 meters, a feat recognized by Guinness World Records. Its nickname is the “Pearl Bridge.” Access is immediately from JR Sanyo Main Line Maiko Station. The bridge serves as part of the Kobe–Awaji–Naruto Expressway, so pedestrians cannot normally cross it. However, an exciting event called the “Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Marine Walk” is held every May and November, allowing participants to walk toward Awaji Island while looking down over the Akashi Strait. Popular as a driving route linking Honshu and Shikoku, the bridge is also illuminated at night with a variety of lighting displays, creating a fantastic scene together with the surrounding nightscape. On the Honshu side, Maiko Park and Mitsui Outlet Park Marine Pia Kobe offer places to stroll and shop while enjoying the magnificent view.
