Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse
Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse is a landmark of the Hakodate Bay Area and a very popular sightseeing spot in Hakodate. Built in 1909, it has long been loved by locals. After a major renewal in 1988, it transformed into a multi-purpose complex containing facilities such as a shopping mall, beer hall, and event hall, while still preserving its historic atmosphere. The row of red brick warehouses along the port creates a charming scene reminiscent of other famous harbor areas like Yokohama or Kobe. The seven brick warehouses each house shops and restaurants, and there are many souvenirs that can only be purchased here. In winter, a major event called Hakodate Christmas Fantasy is held, lighting up the area with romantic illuminations. The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse district is also part of an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and the streetscape is recognized as a Hokkaido Heritage site. Access is about a 15-minute walk from JR Hakodate Station, or take the streetcar to "Jujigai" stop and walk about 5 minutes.
