Mount Hakodate

Mount Hakodate is a mountain in Hakodate City, Hokkaido. It is a tombolo—an island that became connected to the mainland over time, which is relatively rare in Japan—and because its shape resembles a cow lying down, it is also called Gagyu-zan. At the summit of Goten-yama, there is an observation deck that you can reach by the Hakodate Ropeway, by car, or on foot. If you want to enjoy the scenery along the way, walking is strongly recommended, but you will need to climb uphill for about an hour. The night view from Mount Hakodate is famous worldwide. It is counted among Japan’s three great night views, and in Michelin travel guides the night view is selected as a three-star scenic viewpoint. The iconic photos you often see as "Hakodate’s night view" are taken from Mount Hakodate, and most people have seen it at least once. Snowy night views are beautiful, and in summer the city is sometimes shrouded in mist, creating a fantastical nightscape. The recommended season is winter. In 2001, Mount Hakodate and its former battery sites were selected as a Hokkaido Heritage site. To get to Mount Hakodate, it is about 7 minutes by taxi from Hakodate Station, or you can take the streetcar to Jujigai and then walk about 10 minutes. Shuttle buses are also available.
