Hakodate Tram

Hakodate City Tram (Hakodate Shiden) is a streetcar system running through Hakodate, and using it makes sightseeing in the city efficient. The base fare starts from 210 yen, but for tourists, the dedicated one-day pass for the tram is often the best value (adults 600 yen, children 300 yen). Major sightseeing areas such as Yunokawa Onsen, Hakodate Racecourse, Goryokaku Park, the Morning Market, the Seikan Ferry Memorial Mashu-maru area, Bay Area, Hakodate Ropeway for Mount Hakodate, and the Motomachi church district can all be reached on either loop, but it is important to understand that there are two main routes. The Line 2 (Yachigashira route) goes via Yunokawa, Goryokaku-Koen-mae, Hakodate-Ekimae, Jujigai, Horaicho, and toward Yachigashira, covering spots like the Takadaya Kahei statue area, Gokoku Shrine, Hakodate Park, the Ishikawa Takuboku monument, Yachigashira Onsen, Tachimachi Cape, and Hakodate Hachimangu. The Line 5 (Hakodate Dock Mae route) goes via Yunokawa, Goryokaku-Koen-mae, Hakodate-Ekimae, Jujigai, Suehirocho, and toward Hakodate Dock Mae, covering sights such as the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall, Motomachi Park, the Tachikawa family residence, Midori no Shima, the Foreigners’ Cemetery, and Koryu-ji Temple area. Because the branches diverge beyond Jujigai, pay attention when heading to destinations past that point. The total route length is about 11 km. For access, it is easiest to start from the Hakodate Station area where tram stops are close by.
