Hida Takayama Miyagawa Asaichi

Hida-Takayama Miyagawa Morning Market is a morning market that developed from Edo-period markets such as rice, mulberry, and flower markets, and from the mid-Meiji era, local farm wives began lining up vegetables for sale. It is known as one of Japan’s three major morning markets, alongside Wajima Morning Market (Ishikawa) and Katsuura Morning Market (Chiba). It is held year-round, open from around 7:00 to 12:00 along the Miyagawa River between Kajibashi Bridge and Yayoi-bashi Bridge. Stalls sell Hida-Takayama traditional vegetables and fruits cultivated in the region, as well as miso, pickles, and folk crafts such as “sarubobo,” a traditional Hida-Takayama craft. You can feel the seasons, and you’ll also hear lively local Hida dialect up close while interacting with people from the area. Rather than a tourist event or simple product fair, it remains a traditional citizens’ market and a popular place to connect with locals. The market peaks around 10:00, and some items sell out quickly, so going early may lead to rare finds you wouldn’t usually encounter.
