Nokogiriyama Ropeway

The Nokogiriyama Ropeway is a ropeway that connects directly up to the summit area, making sightseeing Mt. Nokogiri much easier. Access is from JR Uchibo Line Hamakanaya Station: walk about 8 minutes toward Tateyama along National Route 127. Mt. Nokogiri is designated as part of Minamiboso Quasi-National Park and, as its name suggests, has a rugged ridgeline like saw teeth—one of Chiba’s representative mountains. It’s full of attractions such as the tallest seated stone Buddha in Japan (“Great Buddha / Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai”) and the expansive Nihon-ji Temple grounds. The “Summit Observatory” offers excellent views; because it faces Tokyo Bay, you can enjoy a grand panorama including Mt. Fuji and the Miura Peninsula. A short walk from the observatory is the famous photo spot “Jigoku Nozoki (Hell Peek),” a rock ledge protruding over a cliff. The ropeway also operates special New Year’s Day service from 5:30 a.m. so visitors can greet the first sunrise at the summit. Around the year-end and New Year period, the air is especially clear, and you can see Mt. Fuji shining white, Tokyo Bay spread out below, and changing colors of dawn light—an awe-inspiring scene.
