Hikawa Shrine
Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located in Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture. It is the head shrine of approximately 280 Hikawa Shrines found throughout Tokyo and Saitama, making it an important spiritual center in the region. Known as one of Japan’s most famous shrines, it attracts more than two million visitors during the New Year period alone, ranking among the top ten shrines nationwide in terms of visitors. The shrine is said to have a history of over 2,400 years. In addition to New Year visits, popular events include the Omiya Takigi Noh performance in May, the annual grand festival in August, and the Taisai Festival in December, all of which draw large crowds. The shrine is about a 15-minute walk from JR Omiya Station, and the approach path is lined with 680 trees of around 30 different species, including majestic zelkova trees that change their appearance with the seasons. Some trees have trunks over two meters thick and are designated as natural monuments. Recently, the shrine has also gained popularity as a power spot, especially among younger tourists. One of the most famous highlights is the Couple Camphor Trees, believed to bring success in love. Hebi no Ike (Snake Pond) still has natural spring water and is used for ritual purification. The shrine garden is also open to the public, allowing visitors to enjoy a peaceful stroll.
