Mt. Hakodate Ropeway
Hakodate Ropeway is a ropeway on Mount Hakodate operated by Hakodate Ropeway Co., Ltd. It is one of the few ropeways in Japan with large cabins that can carry up to 125 passengers. Traveling at 7 meters per second, it reaches the summit in about 3 minutes. Along the way, you can enjoy seasonal scenery as well as both daytime and nighttime views, and from the top you can take in the sweeping panorama of Hakodate—often said to be one of Japan’s most beautiful night views. On New Year’s Eve, the ropeway area also hosts a countdown event, offering experiences unique to Mount Hakodate. While the night view is the biggest draw, daytime visits are also worthwhile: you can enjoy lunch with spectacular views and choose from around 10 hiking courses. Some hiking routes pass by artillery storehouses (not accessible inside), where you can still appreciate the moss-covered structures. Climbing on foot offers a different perspective compared to taking the ropeway. Access is about 10 minutes by bus or taxi from JR Hakodate Station.
