Former Hokkaido Government Office Building

The Former Hokkaido Government Office Building (Old Main Government Building) was constructed in 1888 (Meiji 21) and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. It stands adjacent to the current Hokkaido Government building and is affectionately known by locals as "Old Government Office," "Hokkaido Government Red Brick Building," or simply "Red Brick." It served as the actual government office for roughly 80 years after its construction, and today it is open to the public with exhibits including materials related to Hokkaido’s development and pioneering history. Visitors come to see its historic American Neo-Baroque brick architecture, a classic Western-style building with a strong sense of heritage. The surrounding garden is also beautiful, lined with trees that showcase the seasons—cherry blossoms and hamana-su roses, autumn foliage, and snow—making it a staple sightseeing spot with changing scenery throughout the year. The surrounding area also features complexes packed with gourmet spots, so you can buy a wide range of Hokkaido souvenirs beyond those available inside the building itself. Access to the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building is about an 8-minute walk from JR Sapporo Station’s West side (South Exit area).
