Nanokamachi Street

Nanukamachi Street is a spot where you can still feel the atmosphere of the Taisho era. In the Edo period, three of the Aizu Five Highways passed through here, and it also served as the western gateway to the castle town, so inns, restaurants, and wholesalers lined the street. The name is said to come from the market that was held on the 7th day of each month. Later, it flourished as Aizu’s busiest downtown area until around the 1950s. If you want to experience the historic vibe, visit "Shibukawa Tonya" and "Shirokiya Lacquerware Shop," both designated as Historic Landscape Buildings by Aizuwakamatsu City. At the grand Shibukawa Tonya, you can enjoy authentic local cuisine and even stay overnight, while the earthen-storehouse-style Shirokiya Lacquerware Shop not only sells traditional lacquerware but also offers a free museum where you can learn about Aizu lacquer. The area is also packed with memorable stops, such as the long-established "Hoshiban E-Rosoku Shop," once an official supplier to the Aizu Domain and known for its candle-painting experiences, and "Mitsutaya," where you can try the local specialty miso dengaku. Access to Nanukamachi Street is immediate from JR Nanukamachi Station on the Tadami Line.
