Goshikinuma Ponds

Goshiki-numa (the Goshiki-numa Lakes and Marshes) is a group of mystical ponds and lakes scattered across about 3.6 km in the rich nature of Urabandai, Fukushima Prefecture. Because visitors can experience ponds in many different hues, the area is called "Goshiki-numa" (Five-Color Ponds). Its official name is the "Goshiki-numa Lake Group," and in 2016 it was awarded one star in the Michelin Green Guide. For walking, the "Goshiki-numa Nature Trail" is recommended; in a relatively short time you can enjoy a variety of ponds with distinct colors—emerald green, cobalt blue, turquoise, emerald blue, and pastel blue—while immersed in nature. Ao-numa (Blue Pond) is especially unmissable, with a striking color that doesn’t seem natural. The different colors are said to be influenced by factors such as weather, season, viewing angle, and volcanic substances contained in the water. Since the colors subtly change by season, weather, and time of day, it’s recommended to visit more than once. You can reach the area by bus (about 25 minutes from Inawashiro Station), but transportation can be inconvenient, so visiting by car is often recommended.
