Nakatajima Sand Dune
Nakatajima Sand Dunes are sand dunes located along the Enshunada coast in the southern part of Hamamatsu City. Stretching roughly 0.6 km north–south and about 4 km east–west, they are counted among Japan’s “Three Great Sand Dunes.” They’re also popular for their accessibility—only about 5 km from JR “Hamamatsu” Station and roughly a 15-minute drive away. Wind patterns created by strong sea winds form beautiful ripples in the sand, producing an art-like landscape. Once you cross the dunes, the Pacific Ocean opens up in front of you, and you can enjoy sunset views sinking into the horizon. The grand scenery is often used as a filming location for movies and photo shoots. From spring to summer, the area is also known as a sea-turtle nesting beach. Eggs are protected and hatchlings released by NPO groups, and ongoing efforts continue to preserve this beautiful coastline as one of the limited nesting sites. Around the dunes, the Enshunada Seaside Park area is developed with a wild-bird forest and picnic plaza, and parking is available—making it an easy, recommended sightseeing destination.
