Shikinaen
Shikinaen is a Ryukyuan garden in Naha City, Okinawa. It was completed in 1799 and built in an eclectic style, intended as a reception villa to welcome envoys from the Chinese emperor. Much was lost in World War II, and what you see today has largely been restored. It is also registered as a World Heritage Site and is popular with both domestic and international visitors. Within the grounds lives Shimachisujinori, a freshwater algae found in uplifted coral reef zones and designated a National Natural Monument. The garden features not only Okinawan cultural elements but also Chinese-style stone bridges and other features. It’s a quiet place meant for slow, careful strolling—well suited for adults. One lap takes about an hour. Near the entrance, you can buy Blue Seal ice cream and juices (no eating or drinking is allowed inside the garden). Paid guides are also available. Access: take a bus from Miegusuku Bus Terminal, get off at Shikinaen-mae bus stop, then walk 1 minute.
