Goryōkaku
Goryokaku is a star-shaped fortress site in Hakodate, Hokkaido, designated as a National Special Historic Site. Strictly speaking, it is the former Goryokaku fortress, and today it is maintained as Goryokaku Park, one of Hakodate’s major sightseeing spots. The iconic view of the star shape floating in water is so famous that many people have seen it at least once. Inside the star-shaped outline are many trees, creating seasonal scenery: pink with cherry blossoms in spring, lush green in early summer, red foliage in autumn, and white snow in winter. Goryokaku was the stage of the final battles of the Boshin War, including the Hakodate War, and it served as the last stronghold of the former shogunate forces—making it especially popular with history enthusiasts. It is also a year-round attraction with steady popularity in every season. The outer moat has a walking path of about 1.8 km, and it is popular as a running course. It is also great for a casual stroll while viewing Goryokaku and Goryokaku Tower. Additionally, Hakodate’s official cherry blossom opening announcement is observed using the Somei-Yoshino trees at Goryokaku. For access, take the streetcar from JR Hakodate Station and get off at "Goryokaku-Koen-mae," then proceed toward the park area.
