Hokkaido University Sapporo Campus
Hokkaido University is a national university with 12 faculties and 21 graduate schools. Its predecessor was Sapporo Agricultural College, and it is also famous for the phrase "Boys, be ambitious" attributed to William S. Clark, the first vice principal. Although it is a research institution, it is also open to the public, allowing visitors to explore its history and research exhibits and enjoy Hokkaido University-only gourmet options, making it a well-known sightseeing spot as well. The campus area is said to be about the size of 38 Tokyo Domes, and beyond academic buildings it also features gardens and greenery that are major highlights. You can enjoy the beautiful poplar-lined paths and the Hanaki-en garden where wild birds often appear, take in the natural beauty of "Elm Forest," and then visit the General Museum to experience learning and history. You can also shop for original university goods as souvenirs and enjoy lunch at one of the campus dining halls. There are seven cafeterias on campus, and the most popular is the Central Cafeteria where you can eat alongside students. However, note that during lunchtime hours it may be restricted to student use only, so pay attention to operating hours. Access to the Hokkaido University Sapporo Campus is about a 7-minute walk from the JR Sapporo Station North Exit.
