Kushida Shrine
Kushida Shrine is a shrine in Fukuoka City known for blessings such as marital harmony and business prosperity. Within the grounds is the Meoto Ebisu Shrine, and there is also a pair of ginkgo trees often called “Meoto Ichou” (husband-and-wife ginkgo), reflecting the idea of male and female ginkgo. The shrine is famous for festivals such as Hakata Gion Yamakasa and Hakata Okunchi. Around Setsubun season, a giant Otafuku face appears (from late January through Setsubun), and visitors can pass through its mouth—an act said to bring good fortune—making it very popular. The shrine also has a sacred spring called Reisen Tsuru no Ido; it is said that drinking its water brings longevity. There are also stones such as a “test stone” that visitors can try lifting as an experience. Another unusual highlight is the Otomo Fumiya Stained Glass Memorial Museum on the grounds, displaying about 40 pieces; even the goshuincho (stamp book) design is inspired by stained glass. While remaining an essential shrine for locals, it continues evolving as a shrine with a newer style that is also popular among younger visitors. Access is about a 15-minute walk from Hakata Station.
