Horai Bridge
Horai Bridge (Horaibashi) is the world’s longest wooden pedestrian bridge spanning the Oi River in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is 897.4 meters long and 2.4 meters wide, and it is recognized by Guinness as “the world’s longest wooden pedestrian bridge.” Its length “897.4 m” can be read as “yakunashi” (“no misfortune”), so it is also known as an auspicious bridge, attracting over 100,000 visitors each year. Paying a toll to a bridge attendant (“Hashiban”) and then crossing adds a nostalgic feel. The wooden bridge creaks as you walk, adding a bit of thrill. On clear days, you can even see Mt. Fuji from the middle of the bridge. Its scenic atmosphere has made it a filming location for period dramas and TV programs. On the left bank near the bridge is “Horai Bridge 897.4 Chaya,” selling local specialties like tea; you can enjoy tea soft-serve and other sweets to-go or in the shop. Across the bridge are more “good-luck” spots such as a longevity bell and Seven Lucky Gods statues, making it fun for a stroll. Access: about a 20-minute walk from JR “Shimada” Station. By car, use the parking lot on the north side of the bridge (left bank of the Oi River).
