Hinomisaki Shrine
Hinomisaki Shrine is a shrine in Izumo City at Hinomisaki, positioned as an “oyagami-sama” (ancestral deity) relative to Izumo Taisha, and it is also recorded in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki, marking it as historically significant. It enshrines two deities from Japanese mythology, and its vermilion buildings in a pine forest are sometimes compared to Ryugu-jo (the Dragon Palace). Located on the Shimane Peninsula, it is associated with benefits such as warding off misfortune and enmusubi. It is said that before the shrine moved here, it was on Fumishima (an islet), which is considered sacred; entry is normally prohibited. Fumishima is famous for black-tailed gulls and is designated a Natural Monument. The area is also known as a spiritual spot, and the shrine sells a “sand amulet” that is not displayed and is limited in daily quantity; you must ask a priest how to purchase it, and if it’s sold out, it’s unavailable that day. Access: about 20 minutes by bus from Izumo Taisha; it’s recommended to visit as a set with Izumo Taisha.
