Lake Shinji
Lake Shinji is a large lake spanning Matsue City to Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture, and it is included in Japan’s top scenic views (Nihon Hyakkei). With a circumference of about 45 km, it is said to be the 7th largest lake in Japan. It contains a small amount of seawater, which supports a rich variety of fish; Shinji clams (shijimi) are especially famous. The sunset over Lake Shinji is a renowned spectacle, drawing many people daily. There are sunset cruises that tour the lake for about an hour and view the sunset from an optimal point. Around the lake are attractions like the Shimane Museum of Art, Shinji Lake Green Park, and the Shinji Lake Nature Museum Gobius, making it enjoyable for both adults and children and popular with families. It is also well known as a spot for waterbirds, with over 20,000 birds said to visit. Access: get off at the Yomegashima bus stop—it’s right there.
