Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Footbath
Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Ashiyu is a free footbath in the Shinjiko Onsen area of Matsue City. Shinjiko Onsen, located close to central Matsue, is popular as a sightseeing spot, and the footbath is offered so visitors can casually enjoy hot springs amid the line of ryokan. The footbath has a roof to protect you from sun and rain. Towels are sold at the shop in Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station, so even if you didn’t plan on bathing, you can join easily. It’s especially popular as a way to soothe tired feet during sightseeing. Nearby there is also an “onsen stand” where you can take hot-spring water home, so you can enjoy the onsen even without a full bath (and add it to your bathtub later). The water is on the hot side, making it great in winter. In the onsen town, there’s also a “Yukake Jizo” (hot-water-pouring Jizo); it’s said that pouring hot water over it while making a wish brings good health. Access: about 15 minutes by car from JR Matsue Station.
