Taisha Station

Taisha Station is the preserved former station building of JR West’s now-defunct Taisha Line in present-day Izumo City. The line was discontinued and the station was closed in 1990, but the station building remains as a tourist spot. Built in 1924 (Taisho 13), the wooden station building is designated an Important Cultural Property. Because of its high historical value, it is beloved by many railway fans, with many special rail goods and unique exhibits. It is also notable for preserving rare spaces such as the imperial envoy VIP room used when messengers visited Izumo Taisha, with much of the interior kept as it was. High ceilings and chandeliers remaining from that era are also distinctive. The former office area is now a café called “Nonohana,” which opens only on weekends, so note that. The station interior functions like a small museum, and various events—both railfan-focused and more general—are sometimes held. Access: from JR Izumoshi Station, take a bus, get off at “Taisha Ekidori,” then walk about 1 minute.
