Katsuren Castle Ruins
Katsuren Castle Ruins is a gusuku (Ryukyuan castle) site in Uruma City, Okinawa. The gusuku is famous as the castle of Amawari. It sits on hills of the Katsuren Peninsula, and the Minami-Uebaru Furujima archaeological site spreads out around the ruins. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2000 and is a highly popular scenic spot. Even the stone walls alone convey the former scale of the castle, and the surrounding views are truly grand. The panorama from the top is also superb: abundant nature remains, and an expansive ocean view stretches out before you. Around the castle area, you can still find remains such as old wells where many people once lived—bringing a pamphlet and hunting for each point is recommended. As there are steep slopes and many stairs, wear comfortable walking shoes. There is also a museum on site and a small souvenir corner. If you want deeper details, booking a guided tour is also a good option. Recently, virtual experiences via smartphone have also been introduced. Access: from Naha Bus Terminal, get off at Nishihara bus stop and walk about 10 minutes.
