Hotel New Mitoya

Hotel New Mitoya is a historic hot spring ryokan in Akiu Onsen, Sendai’s inner retreat. Its origins are said to date back to the Kan’ei era, beginning as a therapeutic bathing lodge. Akiu Onsen is beloved as an accessible hot spring area, about 30 minutes by car from central Sendai. The ryokan offers a free shuttle bus from JR “Sendai Station” (reservation required), and there are also route buses and a sightseeing liner bus. Inside, there are three large public bath areas and 16 types of baths in total, making it popular for “bath hopping” within the property. Options include open-air rock baths, hinoki baths, ceramic baths, and saunas. There are also three types of private baths, letting families or couples relax in privacy. Three rooms include semi-open-air baths. Room styles include Japanese-Western rooms with beds (good for older guests) and more formal Japanese-style rooms. On the grounds are a Japanese garden courtyard and a storehouse museum displaying works by leading Japanese ceramic artists, creating a special atmosphere. Day-use bathing and day-trip plans with meals are also available, making it recommended for those who want to enjoy hot springs casually.
