Boat trip down the Geibi Gorge

Geibikei Boat Ride is a traditional river cruise operating on the Satetsu River in Ichinoseki City. Geibikei Gorge, carved by the river’s erosion, stretches about two kilometers and is lined with dramatic rock formations and sheer cliffs, and it is counted among Japan’s "100 Scenic Views." From the boat, you can enjoy an enchanting gorge landscape and seasonal flowers, experiencing Japan’s four seasons in a way that makes it one of Iwate’s most popular sightseeing attractions. Another highlight is the skill unique in Japan: the boatmen propel the boat back and forth using only a single pole. Their boat song, "Geibi Oiwake," is also part of the charm. The nearest station is JR Ofunato Line "Geibikei Station," but train services are limited, so checking the timetable in advance is recommended. Buses also run from JR "Ichinoseki Station." Free parking is available nearby, making access by car easy as well. The boat rides operate year-round, and from December to February, kotatsu boats run for a cozy winter experience. Snow-covered gorge scenery can look like an ink painting. At the turnaround point on the 90-minute round trip, you’ll see the imposing rock face of "Dai-Geibiiwa" and can also try the popular "Undama" (luck-test) stone toss, another fun highlight for visitors.
