Hospitality dome
The Motenashi Dome is a massive all-glass dome built at the East Exit area of Kanazawa Station (Hokuriku Shinkansen Kanazawa Station) as part of the station-area development project. Right after exiting the station, it was designed to represent the “spirit of hospitality” by offering an “umbrella” to visitors, so they are not affected by Kanazawa’s frequent rain and snow. The dome uses 3,019 glass panels. Along with it, the wooden “Tsuzumi-mon” gate was also built, modeled after the tsuzumi drum used in Kanazawa’s traditional Noh performing arts. The roof’s gentle curves, supported by two main pillars, evoke the drum’s shape. Both structures allow passengers to board taxis or buses while staying under cover, showing thoughtful design. It’s also a famous photo spot and has been selected as one of the world’s 14 most beautiful stations. From sunset until 0:00, Tsuzumi-mon is lit up, and at set times a 2-minute illumination inspired by Kaga Goshiki (traditional five colors) is performed. The underground area also serves as an event plaza, so it’s worth checking what events are on. Access: immediately on foot from JR Kanazawa Station (Kenrokuen Exit / East Exit).
