Takayama Showa Museum
Takayama Showa-kan is a facility designed like an entire town, where you can see and learn about daily life and culture from the Showa era. In Takayama, known for streetscapes that retain Edo-period atmosphere, a building filled with Showa vibes suddenly appears. At the entrance, a reception modeled after a Showa-era movie theater and a dagashiya candy shop greet you, making you feel as if you’ve time-traveled to the Showa period. Dim alleyways display enamel signs and Showa-era vending machines. The faithfully recreated streets feature spaces like a barber shop and an electronics store, offering glimpses into Showa life and culture. There are figures, tin toys, magazines, and posters from the era, and you can not only look but also take photos and play in the spaces, including the dagashiya area. Even people who never lived through Showa may feel a nostalgic warmth. In the elementary school section, you can also eat nostalgic school lunch items like fried bread and soft noodles. Retro games, slots, smart ball, and even Japan’s oldest UFO catcher can be enjoyed, and you can buy classic snacks like ramune and drops candy.
