Ogaki Castle

Ogaki Castle is a fortress called the “Stronghold of West Mino,” notable nationwide for its rare four-story keep. During the Battle of Sekigahara, it became the base of the Western Army led by Ishida Mitsunari. Even after the main forces moved to Sekigahara and formed their lines, fierce battles continued here. Later, the Toda clan became lords of a 100,000-koku domain, and peace lasted until the Meiji era. The castle was designated a National Treasure in 1936, but it was destroyed by war damage; the current keep was reconstructed in 1959. Inside the castle’s exhibition rooms, you can see a diorama of the Battle of Kuisegawa and a joint-signed document written just before the Battle of Sekigahara. There are also hands-on corners where you can hold and experience Sengoku-era weapons such as matchlock guns, spears, and bows. In the 4th-floor exhibition room, small windows and hanging items like jin-daiko war drums add atmosphere. In spring cherry blossom season, night illuminations are also held, letting you enjoy a fantastic view of Ogaki Castle. On the nearby Suimon River, tub-boat rides and river cruises let you admire cherry blossoms and autumn leaves from the water’s surface.
