Munakata Taisha Shinpokan
Munakata Taisha Shrine Treasure Hall (Shinpo-kan) is part of Munakata Taisha, one of Japan’s oldest shrines appearing in Japanese mythology. The Treasure Hall houses the sacred treasures of Okinoshima, including National Treasures. Around 80,000 National Treasure items discovered on Okinoshima are exhibited, and the National Treasure gold ring is especially a must-see. Because it preserves and displays important cultural properties that could only be handed down by Munakata Taisha, many tourists visit daily. From the 1st to the 3rd floor, visitors can see an impressive array of treasures such as gilt-bronze openwork fittings with arabesque patterns (traditionally attributed to Okinoshima) and hard-jade clove-headed magatama from Oshima, among others. Munakata Taisha itself is also registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site as part of the “Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region.” With most exhibits being National Treasures, it is one of the rare exhibition halls in Japan of this kind. You can strongly feel the history of Japan, and many people sense a special sacred atmosphere upon entering. It’s recommended to research in advance and take your time to enjoy the visit. Access is about 12 minutes by bus from Togo Station.
