Hakozaki Shrine
Hakozaki Shrine is a shrine in Fukuoka City, also called Hakozaki Hachimangu. Together with Usa Jingu and Iwashimizu Hachimangu, it is counted among Japan’s Three Great Hachiman Shrines. Both the worship hall and main hall are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. It is said to be Fukuoka’s top shrine for victory luck, making it famous for boosting one’s fortune. There are many highlights such as the “sazare-ishi” (pebble-formed rock). A particularly notable tradition is the “Tama-seseri,” a luck-bringing festival that has continued for 500 years, where people fiercely compete for a sacred ball—an intense, must-see event worth timing your visit for. Along the approach is the Shinen Flower Garden, and during the autumn festival, the approach becomes a pedestrian zone with a flea market held about once a month, featuring around 200 stalls. The shrine and its surroundings are filled with auspicious motifs everywhere—just visiting can feel like your luck is rising. The handmade “Ohajiki” charms (said to ward off misfortune) vary subtly one by one, so it’s fun to choose carefully. The goshuincho (stamp book) is also distinctive—black and gold with an unmistakably lucky vibe. Access is about a 1-minute walk from Hakozaki-miya-mae Station.
