Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Dazaifu Tenmangu is a Shinto shrine in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, attracting more than about 8.5 million visitors annually. It is famous as a shrine of learning, drawing many students who come to pray for success in exams. The enshrined deity is Sugawara no Michizane. Just after entering, there is a sacred ox statue (Goshin-gyu); it is said that stroking its head brings wisdom. On the way to the main hall, you cross three bridges—arched bridge, flat bridge, arched bridge—often said to symbolize one’s past, present, and future. The shrine houses cultural assets including the National Treasure “Kan’en” (巻第卅), and there are many other highlights such as Important Cultural Properties and Natural Monuments. Plum-related stories are especially prominent: the legendary Tobiume (Flying Plum) is central to the shrine’s lore, sacred sake includes plum wine, and the approach is lined with shops selling the local specialty ume-gae mochi. There are also unique charms such as fortunes that change color, and many ema plaques left by exam-takers. It is also known for having the grave of actor Bunta Sugawara. On the approach you’ll also find the Starbucks Dazaifu Tenmangu Omotesando store, notable for its distinctive presence. Access is about a 5-minute walk from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station.
