Shizuoka Municipal Nihondaira Zoo
Shizuoka City Nihondaira Zoo is a public zoo that opened in 1969 as a place of relaxation for citizens. A renovation aimed at creating a zoo with new discoveries every visit was completed at the end of 2013, adding many ideas—such as behavioral exhibits—that let you observe animals’ natural behaviors up close. The zoo keeps about 160 species and 700 individual animals. The very popular Red Panda House allows you to watch adorable red pandas from many angles. At “Beast House 299,” you can see polar bears, spotted seals, lions, and more. The “Petting Zoo” offers interaction with small animals like rabbits, pony rides, and goat feeding—great for young children. The “Flying Mega Dome,” where you can watch birds flying freely, is one of the largest in Japan. There’s also a small amusement area with a merry-go-round and Japan’s longest roller slide. The 390-meter slide is a favorite piece of playground equipment that excites both adults and kids. With many all-weather facilities, you can enjoy the zoo without worrying about the weather. Since it’s a municipal zoo, the admission fee is also reasonably priced. Access: about 10–15 minutes by bus from JR “Higashi-Shizuoka” Station (South Exit). On weekends and holidays, direct buses are also operated.
