Oigawa Railway
Oigawa Railway (Oigawa Tetsudo) is a railway company in Shizuoka Prefecture famous for operating steam locomotives (SL). On the Oigawa Main Line between Kanaya Station and Senzu Station, steam locomotives and classic Showa-era trains run, attracting not only rail fans but also a wide audience. The steam locomotives run more than 300 days a year, and the company is said to be No.1 in Japan in terms of operating days, total running distance, and the number of locomotives in active operation. The four steam locomotives were all built in the early Showa period. Inside the passenger cars, you’ll find nostalgic details like wooden seats, incandescent lights, and old fans, creating an old-time atmosphere. Conductors entertain passengers with introductions to the SL and even harmonica performances, and combined with the peaceful countryside scenery along the Oi River, it’s a soothing experience. Station bento packed with Shizuoka specialties are also popular. Around summer each year, the limited-time “Thomas the Tank Engine” train runs and draws many families. Between Senzu Station and Ikawa Station, the “Minami Alps Abt Line” runs through spectacular gorges and is known for features like Japan’s steepest gradient and a station on a lake. The SL service starts at “Shin-Kanaya” Station, and JR connects with Oigawa Railway at the previous station, “Kanaya” Station. Near Shin-Kanaya Station is “Plaza Loco,” where you can buy Oigawa Railway goods and see displays of old steam locomotives—fun even if you don’t ride the train.
