Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium

Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium opened as a place to encounter rare deep-sea creatures, taking advantage of its location by Suruga Bay, the deepest bay in Japan. It has gained popularity as Japan’s first aquarium themed around the deep sea. Along with creatures from Suruga Bay, it introduces many unique deep-sea animals—offering encounters with unusual life forms you rarely see. Though the aquarium is compact, it exhibits around 200 species and about 3,000 individual deep-sea organisms. The second floor is the Coelacanth Museum, displaying not only a coelacanth taxidermy specimen but also an extremely rare frozen specimen, exploring the mysteries of this “living fossil.” The aquarium is located within “Minato 83,” an area with plenty of dining options including restaurants where you can taste deep-sea fish. Next door is the ride-type shooting attraction “THE DEEP SEA WORLD ~Shinkai Okoku~,” letting you fully enjoy a deep-sea theme. Access: about 15 minutes by bus from JR “Numazu” Station (South Exit), or about 5–10 minutes by car; about 25 minutes by car from Tomei Expressway Numazu IC and also about 25 minutes from Shin-Tomei Expressway Nagaizumi-Numazu IC. When driving, use nearby paid parking lots.
