Shimane Aquarium Aquas
Shimane Aquarium AQUAS is the largest aquarium in the Chugoku–Shikoku region, located in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. A major highlight is three beluga whales known for the trademark “Happy Bubble Ring®.” The belugas are AQUAS’s star attraction and perform popular shows featuring “Miracle Rings” and “Magic Rings.” In addition to belugas, there are seal, sea lion, and penguin shows, and you can even take photos with seals; the close distance between visitors and marine life is part of its appeal. The facility is divided into various zones, and you can also lie down and watch fish and penguins from below. During Golden Week, playful displays like “penguin streamers” (instead of carp streamers) appear, keeping things fresh. The aquarium covers about 14,000 m² and is designed for all-day enjoyment—captivating not only kids but also adults. Access: about a 10-minute walk from JR San’in Main Line “Hashi Station.” By car, get off at San’in Expressway “Hamada-higashi IC,” then about 6 minutes. Free parking accommodates about 2,000 cars.
