Townscape of Omori
Omori Townscape is a preserved historic area in Oda City, Shimane Prefecture, once the central settlement of the Iwami Ginzan domain. Traditional streets, old shrines and temples, and the remains of the Omori Magistrate’s Office are preserved and restored through conservation projects, and the area is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. With Iwami Ginzan registered as a World Heritage site, you can use the World Heritage Center as a base for visits. Rental bicycles are available for exploring the townscape, and cycling through the lush natural surroundings feels great. Within the town are many highlights: stylish bakeries, cafés, and variety shops converted from old houses, confectioners using traditional methods, retro red post boxes, and more. A “one-coin guide” town-walk course led by locals is also recommended; they share small stories and insights that make the visit richer. The temple Kanzeon-ji, said to offer a panoramic view of the World Heritage landscape, is a must-see. Access: from Oda-shi Station, take a bus about 30 minutes.
