Saitama Kofun Park

Sakitama Kofun Park is a prefectural urban park located in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture. The Sakitama Burial Mounds (nine in total) were designated a historic site in 1938 and developed as “Sakitama Fudoki no Oka.” Maruhakayama Kofun is said to be the largest circular burial mound in Japan, and while it is currently designated as a National Historic Site, the Sakitama Burial Mounds are also aiming to become a World Heritage-level global asset. At Shogunyama Kofun, visitors can tour the inside and see the horizontal stone chamber up close. Sakitama Kofun Park includes the Saitama Prefectural Museum of the Sakitama Historic Site, the Haniwa Hall, the Shogunyama Kofun Exhibition Hall, relocated traditional houses, open lawns, ancient grasslands, ancient forests and a botanical garden, and play areas, making it enjoyable for everyone from children to seniors. Every May, the Sakitama Fire Festival is held, and during the daytime there are folk performances, product fairs, flea markets, and more. Be sure to experience the park’s impressive scale for yourself. Access to Sakitama Kofun Park is easy: from Gyoda Station on the JR Takasaki Line, take the city loop bus for 15 minutes, get off at “Sakitama Kofun Koen-mae,” and it is right there.
