Gongendo Park
Gongendo Sakura Tsutsumi, commonly known as Gongendo Cherry Blossom Bank, is one of Japan’s most famous cherry blossom viewing spots. Approximately 1,000 cherry trees line the levee of the Nakagawa River for about one kilometer, creating a spectacular tunnel of cherry blossoms that is rare nationwide. The cherry trees are Somei Yoshino, and at full bloom the scenery is breathtaking. At the same time, fields of yellow rapeseed flowers bloom nearby, creating a striking color contrast. During cherry blossom season, Sotobashi Bridge over the Nakagawa River is illuminated, allowing visitors to enjoy nighttime cherry blossom viewing. In the rainy season, around 15,000 hydrangea plants bloom, and in autumn approximately one million red spider lilies color the area. The site has been used as a setting for numerous movies and anime, making it a popular pilgrimage spot for fans. Gongendo Sakura Tsutsumi can be reached by taking the Tobu Nikko Line to Satte Station, then riding the Asahi Bus bound for Goka Town Hall and getting off at Gongendo, followed by a 1-minute walk. Seasonal events such as the Narcissus Festival, Cherry Blossom Festival, and Red Spider Lily Festival are also held and worth checking.
